Its been 35 years since I joined the pest control industry. I still remember my first day as a termite home inspector (great title) and the company supplied me with an old Volkswagen beetle which my kids nicknamed uncle (rego was unk000), they used to fight over who would get behind the back seat. 

 

My aim was to achieve excellence in the termite control industry and be as environmentally conscientious as possible by starting my own company called Environmental Systems Pest Control.  My wife, myself and my kids dropped what seemed like millions of pamphlets all over Perth, we got two phone calls the first month and the next month one phone call, our ideas of a safer method of termite control was too ambitious for the 1970s.

 

The outcome in the end, many years later was to join a local Perth company whose owner invented, patented and developed a termite reticulation system. My role was testing, recorf the data and to make sure that the system worked efficiently to satisfy the government and the CSRIO that there was a better method than hand spraying. Physical termite barriers were an over night success (nearly 15 years). In Queensland, builders must have a physical termite barrier or a reticulation system installed before a concrete slab is poured for a new building, but not here in Western Australia.
